Adele Cleans Up at a Somber (and Awkward) Grammys

February 13, 2012 at 1:19pm PST

As we predicted, Adele was the bigger winner at the Grammys last night, taking home six out of six awards. And she certainly deserved them. She took the stage, too, and sang "Rolling in the Deep." She still sounds pretty flawless, despite recent throat surgery, so that's good news.

The rest of the Grammys though...it was awkward. Obviously the death of Whitney Houston the night before was ever present throughout the ceremony. Jennifer Hudson sang a beautiful version of "I Will Always Love You" in her honor. But other tributes throughout the night didn't quite work. For example, early on Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys came out to sing an Etta James song as her tribute, but then they made it somehow about both artists, which didn't quite work.

Many of the performers dedicated their performances to Whitney, but it all seemed so tacked on and last minute...mostly because it was. We know these things are rehearsed, and live shows can't really be changed at the last minute, but why did Chris Brown, Dave Grohl, and Paul McCartney sing more than once in a really long show?

Immortals in 3-D is the latest 300 knockoff hitting the silver screen. Action packed, full of gore and CGI effects this film leaves us wanting some more plot. Or another scene of Frida Pinto and Henry Cavill naked in 3-D.

F. Gary Gray's latest effort, Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, is a knockout! Exhilirating, wry and breathcatchingly paced, it's a stellar accomplishment for everyone involved. Hell yeah you should see it!

Scott Hicks, the director of Shine, and Clive Owen teamed up for this gloriously beautiful if underwhelming project. It's not that it's bad, it's just not that memorable and with such supreme talent attached, I was hoping for and expecting a lot more.

Oh, Diablo Cody, why'd you have to do it? I love you so long...and then you made this. Megan Fox does what she always does, she looks hot. At least there's that. Sophmoric, unfunny and obsessively idiosyncratic, it's a painful movie going experience.
