Anne Hathaway Nervous About Depicting Judy Garland

June 9, 2009 at 1:31pm PST

As previously reported, Anne Hathaway will be playing Judy Garland in the upcoming biopic about the troubled star, titled Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland and based on the biography by Gerald Clarke (Capote).

Anne, who attended the Tony Awards last Sunday, told the NY Daily News backstage, “I think I’m either naive or insane to play her — maybe a little bit of both!”

When asked about the opinion of Liza Minelli (Garlands’s daughter) about the project, Anne replied, “I haven’t had a chance to talk to her about it yet, but I understand that as long as I treat Judy with respect — which of course I will — Liza is very happy about it.”

Judy Garland, most famous for playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, began singing and acting as a toddler and led a troubled life. She suffered through relationship dramas, five marriages, substance abuse, and money troubles. She died at the age of 47 from drug overdose.

After her terrific Oscar-nominated performance in Rachel Getting Married, where she also played a troubled young woman, we’re sure Anne will do a fine job playing the icon with the famous ruby red slippers.

Scott Hicks, the director of Shine, and Clive Owen teamed up for this gloriously beautiful if underwhelming project. It's not that it's bad, it's just not that memorable and with such supreme talent attached, I was hoping for and expecting a lot more.

Oh, Diablo Cody, why'd you have to do it? I love you so long...and then you made this. Megan Fox does what she always does, she looks hot. At least there's that. Sophmoric, unfunny and obsessively idiosyncratic, it's a painful movie going experience.

Chocolate and peanut butter. Spaghetti and meatballs. Bobcat Goldthwait and profanity. Two great tastes that taste great together. Gone is the Bobcat of the Police Academy movies and in his stead is a fantastic writer-director who's able to orchestrate the most brilliantly, hilarious vulgarity imaginable. World's Greatest Dad is a fantastic dark comedy (very dark) that features Robin Williams' best performance since Good Will Hunting. See it!
