Charles Gibson announced today that he's stepping down from the anchor desk at ABC's World News. But the cool part is that his replacement will be Diane Sawyer, who has been hosing Good Morning America for years (formerly with Gibson).
It's a welcome step-up for her, and we hope people will still watch, just like we did when Katie Couric took over at CBS. There's a lot of talk about how well Sawyer will do in comparison to Couric (who's show comes in third place in the ratings), but come on people! Why does it always have to be about women competing?
It's just as relevant to wonder if Sawyer will beat out Brian Williams in the ratings. His show on NBC is currently number one. You never heard about Dan Rather and Tom Brokaw having it out, did you?
Gibson will step down at the end of the year, and Sawyer will begin at the beginning of next year. We think it is great that the there are now two female anchors. It's their challange (and Brian Williams') to prove to us that we should be watching and not getting our news from CNN or the Internet, and we can't wait to see the results.
