Last night, the Oscars went pretty much as expected. The Hurt Locker won the top prize, in only a mild upset over Avatar. Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Mo'Nique, and Christoph Waltz all won for acting. But just because there were no surprises, doesn't mean that they weren't as fun as ever.
It seems like they would never get here, but tonight the Oscars will finally be given out. After months and months of build-up and various other awards, they are here. So what are the big showdowns of the night? Let's break it down:
Audiences have slipped down the rabbit hole, giving Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland a record-breaking opening weekend.
The film took in $116.3 million, making it the highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a movie that wasn't released in either May, July or November. The number was also big enough to make Alice's opening the sixth highest debut overall.
We wonder if Jake Gyllenhaal and Matt Damon are both kicking themselves now?
James Cameron has revealed that he talked to both stars about Avatar, and they both turned him down.
The Hurt Locker has toppled Avatar at another award show! This time it was the BAFTAs this weekend, Britain's equivalent of our Oscars.
It was a near shut out at the box office this past Friday.
Shutter Island, the latest Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio collaboration, dominated the box office on Friday, taking in $14 million and putting it on track to best the pair's most successful film thus far, The Departed.
It may be President's Day weekend, but Valentine's Day is king of the box office.
Garry Marshall's ensemble rom-com took in $15 million on Friday, putting it on track to make over $50 million by the time all is said and done on Monday.
Avatar's reign of terror at the box office has come to an end after seven weeks at the top. So who's the new champ? In a little bit of a shocker, it's Dear John.
Dear John made an estimated $32.4 million over Avatar's $23.6 million. John Travolta's From Paris with Love rounded out the top three.
As predicted it's Avatar and The Hurt Locker that will be duking it out at this year's Oscars. The nominations were announced this morning and both films scored nine nominations apiece.
The Oscar nominations may not come out until tomorrow, but we officially have a frontrunner on our hands. And it's not Avatar!
This weekend adding to the barrage of awards beinging thrown at The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow also won the Directors Guild Award for the film. She is the first woman ever to win the award!
