Disaster film 2012 is this weekend's big winner at the box office, taking in $23.7 million on Friday and $25.5 million on Saturday, for a projected $64 million over its opening weekend. It's also earned over $170 million worldwide.
Last week's winner, Disney's A Christmas Carol, held strong at number two with a $23 million weekend.
Finally, Precious is continuing to do well in limited release and critics' favorite The Fantastic Mr. Fox also performed well for only opening in a few theaters across the country.
Disney's A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey, took the top spot at the box office this past Friday, making $9 million in its debut.
The real story this weekend, however, is Precious, which earned a record $585,000 despite being played in only 18 theaters nationwide. That's the best showing ever for any film debuting in under 100 locations.
We know it seemed like the big film awards show season just ended (Don't forget the Emmy Awards tonight!), but there's already a new Best Picture favorite.
