See It or Skip It: Moon

Duncan Jones' Sundance hit Moon, featuring an outstanding performance by Sam Rockwell, pays homage to some of the best films of the 60s and 70s while forging a path entirely its own.

Vast and vacuous; that was the void Duncan Jones discovered when he set out to make his directorial debut, Moon, starring Sam Rockwell. The movie pays homage to the films writer-director Jones and Rockwell watched and loved as children of the 1970s.

Outland, Silent Running, Alien; these were films I remembered growing up and Sam remembers and we were talking about when we had a meeting about three years ago” Jones, scruffy and excitable, recalls.

Duncan Jones directorial debut, Moon, is, like its namesake, mesmerizing, stunning, haunting, illuminating and mysterious. A throwback to 70s-style science fiction films like Outland with a dash of 2001, star Sam Rockwell turns in a virtuoso performance which moves from brash, aggressive space cowboy to a slowly disintegrating permutation of Dustin Hoffman’s Ratzo Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy.

We're guessing The Winning Season was, most likely, a script that writer-director James C. Strouse (Grace is Gone) wanted to sell to a studio like Disney but couldn't, so, instead, he decided to suck it up, shoot on DV Cam, try to get the most name brand talent he could (in this case, Emma Roberts and Sam Rockwell) and shoot his vision.

Sam Rockwell stars as a former high school basketball star who's now a divorced, alcoholic dish washer relegated to stealing leftover food and drinks from the tables he buses.

Standing in the shadow of a man like David Fincher is never easy. Plunking yourself there by tackling material you’re ill-equipped to handle is just begging for a flogging, one we’re happy to give.

Holy hot sauce! It’s a double dip!

Sam Rockwell and Viggo Mortensen arrive at the Cinevegas Half-Life Awards, where they were both honored.

They both have that brooding, tortured, “I’m too talented for my own good” thing going on…and it’s so tantalizing!

If you haven’t seen Viggo (and his peen) in all his murderous naked rage in Eastern Promises, that needs to go to the top of your Netflix queue.

James Caan gets in for the good stuff with Anjelica Huston as they arrive for the Cinevegas Film Festival Half-Life Awards.

Sexxxy.

The award ceremony honored the film works of James Caan, Anjelica Huston, Don Cheadle, Rosario Dawson, Robert Duvall, Clark Gregg and Sam Rockwell. The event was held at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas, where the temperature was 108° F and only getting’hotter if Caan had his way.

F. Gary Gray's latest effort, Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, is a knockout! Exhilirating, wry and breathcatchingly paced, it's a stellar accomplishment for everyone involved. Hell yeah you should see it!

Scott Hicks, the director of Shine, and Clive Owen teamed up for this gloriously beautiful if underwhelming project. It's not that it's bad, it's just not that memorable and with such supreme talent attached, I was hoping for and expecting a lot more.

Oh, Diablo Cody, why'd you have to do it? I love you so long...and then you made this. Megan Fox does what she always does, she looks hot. At least there's that. Sophmoric, unfunny and obsessively idiosyncratic, it's a painful movie going experience.

Chocolate and peanut butter. Spaghetti and meatballs. Bobcat Goldthwait and profanity. Two great tastes that taste great together. Gone is the Bobcat of the Police Academy movies and in his stead is a fantastic writer-director who's able to orchestrate the most brilliantly, hilarious vulgarity imaginable. World's Greatest Dad is a fantastic dark comedy (very dark) that features Robin Williams' best performance since Good Will Hunting. See it!
